SALUDABLES: Building a pipeline for homegrown dietitians in Yuma

SALUDABLES builds on existing partnerships with Arizona Western College and Imperial Valley College to create a clear educational pathway for local students to earn their RDN credential.

Educators at the School of Nutritional Sciences and Wellness, Arizona Western College, and Imperial Valley College are partnering on a new project to develop an educational pipeline for nutrition and dietetics professionals in Yuma, Arizona. The project, entitled SALUDABLES (Strengthening Awareness for Living Healthy Using Dietetics Approaches and Boosting Local Educational Success), has won a $983,112 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) as part of their Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Education Grants Program.

SALUDABLES will expand the existing educational infrastructure available to nutrition and dietetics students at UArizona Yuma, according to project director Ashlee Linares-Gaffer. "SALUDABLES will build a pipeline so that students from the area can complete their training, start to finish, in Yuma, in the hope that students will stay and build their professional careers there."
