ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

Dr. Misner is currently on the selection committee for Carondelet St. Mary's Hospital Dietetic Internship in Tucson. Applicants compete for 6 positions. She wrote the curriculum for this internship and received initial approval in 1994.

Cooperative Extension: Dr. Misner is responsible for Outreach Education providing program support, training, and development of educational materials in the areas of Nutrition, Health, Wellness and Food Safety. She consults with state agencies on food and nutrition programs for low income families, mothers of young children and pregnant adolescents.
She is the State Coordinator for the EFNEP (Extension Food and Nutrition Education Program) & SNAP-Ed (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program & Education) in Arizona.

Research in Progress: W-2003 Multi State Research Project-How to Motivate Parents to Promote Intake of Calcium Rich Foods among Early Adolescents. With C Boushey (Purdue), C Bruhn (UC-Davis), M Ballejos (WSU), M Cluskey & D Maddy (Oregon State), C Gunther (OSU), M Reicks (MN), R Richards (BYU), SS Wong (USU), S Welsh (NIFA). Description: W-2003 is focused through messaging to parents to help them motivate the intake of their children to include more calcium rich foods especially those most at a higher risk for osteoporosis later in life. Impact: Information will be used to design more effective osteoporosis prevention programs.

Research in Progress 2: NC1169- EFNEP Related Research, Program Evaluation and Outreach. With S Baker (CSU), K Barale (WSU), N Betts & J Phelps (OKState), H Forsythe (KY), S Procter (KSU), D Weatherspoon (MSU), M Wilson (NV), SS Wong (USU), K Yerza (ME), D Hamernik & W Koszewski (UNL), S Welsh (NIFA). Impact: Conducted a pilot study to determine the feasibility of using electronic dietary assessments with EFNEP clients and quantified participant stories about experiences in and as a result of EFNEP as a measurable tool to determine impact of EFNEP upon participants Quality of Life (QOL).

EXTENSION PROGRAMS

• Health Promotion/Disease Prevention. Objective: to promote health and to prevent onset of chronic disease by helping Arizonans make informed choices about food, nutrition and their health habits.
• Food and Water Safety. Objective: help consumers learn safe food practices, food storage and food preservation and to provide food safety training and proper hand washing to low income children and families to prevent illness.
• My position as State Coordinator for EFNEP and FSNEP provides county faculty and staff with funding, materials and resources. This enables them to double and expand their efforts to provide food and nutrition education to low income families in their communities.
• Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program (FSNEP). Nutrition education in 8 counties for low income children or adults in areas not served by EFNEP. Nutrition education involves improving fruit & veg intake, reducing fat intake (in milk products), increasing physical activity, prevention of chronic diseases i.e obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis and hypertension, and food safety.
• Extension Food & Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). EFNEP provides nutrition education in 5 counties to low income youth and adults. The program is designed to assist low-income audiences in acquiring the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and changed behavior necessary for nutritionally sound diets. It also contributes to their personal development and the improvement of the total family diet and nutritional well-being.
